Major District Projects There are two major literacy related initiatives operating in District 9460 Head First with Rotary – a seminar for those involved with the development of children in their early years, and their families. Following the success of the inaugural Head First vocational literacy seminar held in May 2006, a second will be held. Clubs will be invited to sponsor delegates and encouraged to work with them to plan and implement projects that will give very young children the best possible start to school. Delegates can be professionals or volunteers who have a particular interest in very young children and their parents.
- Canadian Computer Assisted Learning Solution (CCALS)
District 9460 has agreed to be involved in Rotary International’s Canadian Computer Assisted Literacy Solution Pilot Project (CCALS). Rotary clubs, individual Rotarians and others sponsor people who wish to participate in the computer assisted program that is designed to increase their reading and math skills. The level of computer skills needed is minimal. www.autoskill.com gives information on the software. How can your club become involved?
- Sponsor participants in the program. Sponsors can be clubs, Rotarians and others. The cost to sponsor each participant is approximately Aus$50.00
- Find participants who can be of any age with a preference for adults and teenage learners for the pilot program.
- Refer participants to a Facilitator: the list will be made available to all clubs.
- Register each participant with CCALS District Coordinator, Sylvia Byers.
The Sponsor needs to ensure the participant has access to high speed internet.
Computer skills are not needed by the participant because the facilitator will guide the participant. Facilitators need not be teachers. CCALS is highly recommended to all clubs as a project. The difference to the self esteem of those who use the program can be significant because the feedback on improvement is regular and the program is self paced.
